Here’s another one my sister got me for my birthday! Here’s a brand I’ve never seen before – Mamee. It’s from Malaysia! Let’s have a look!

Here’s the info on the distributor’s sticker.

Here’s the side (click image to enlarge).

…and the top info (click image to enlarge).

This is the coolest fork ever – you pull it apart and it clicks!

See? Rad!

Powder seasoning packet.

Seasoned oil.

Here’s everything awaiting the boiling water.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Let’s see… The noodles are indeed plentiful – and not too shabby. The broth is chickenish – not too bad. The veggies are passable. This isn’t anything really to write home about, then again it isn’t a bad cup of noodles. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022301242 .

Slrrrp Curry!

Here’s another Mamee my sis brought me back from Canada. Let’s give it a whirl.

Lid detail (click image to enlarge).

Must say I really like the new camera – this came out pretty swell! Click image to enlarge.

Woo-hoo! A free fork – You pull either end and it extends! Awesome!

The noodle block.

Powdered seasoning.

Very powdery.

Veggies. The fine print is interesting; I wonder what the protective coating is all about?

Looks like a pea and a light smattering of other ingredients.

Finished (click image to enlarge). First off, the noodles: decent gauge and sturdiness after steeping. The problem here is the flavoring; the broth is funky – I would say this one tastes a bit like Pringles potato chips and that’s all fine and dandy in a chip form, but a liquid Pringle isn’t so great. The vegetables were very few and far between. I might have found more if I was able to eat all of this. Disappointing. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC barcode 955502301211.

Here’s one my sis got me in the Vancouver, BC area. Tom Yum’s usually something I like – let’s see!

The distributor’s sticker.

Here’s the lid and it’s info (click image to enlarge).

Side panel (click image to enlarge).

The noodle block did not want to come out of the cup! The cup by the way is plastic and the lid is made of foil.

Powder seasoning packet.

…and its contents.

Seasoned oil.

If you’re wondering, what I do is put a little hot water in the little cup and swish it around so I can get the seasoned oil out after the photograph.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a little Huy Fong Sriracha on top. I’m pleasantly surprised! The noodles aren’t bad – better than expected. Tom Yum is usually a spicy, citrussy flavor. They got it right! This is a decent cup! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars! UPC bar code 9555022301235 .

Hey cool – the Malasian noodle festival!

Hey this sounds good! Check it out!

Here’s the side panel – excuse the snipping (click image to enlarge).

The lid (click image to enlarge).

Noodles…

The solitary packet.

Hooray for curry! Smells good.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some onion and a little Daesang Gochujang. The noodles are pretty bad. The curry flavoring was pretty good in the broth, although it left me wanting more – much more. 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022301228 .

As they’d say on Monty Python, ‘and now for something completely different.’ Here are some curry flavor noodles that I got up in Canada during my birthday trip! Curry just sounded good today. This is gonna be one of the few chances to delve into the noodle hamper between Meet The Manufacturer spotlights – got some really interesting ones lined up for ya! Let’s check these curry flavor noodles from Malaysia!

The distributor’s sticker.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks like no animal products here.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a noodle block that looked like this!

Powder seasoning.

I really like curry and this stuff has that curry smell I like.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added some roast beef, sweet onion and bell pepper that I sauteed with a little soy sauce. The noodles are chewier than I expected – they also have a very ultra slight crumbliness that I like here. The broth is strong curry flavor but a little salty. If you’re looking for a bowl of curry noodles, this’ll do the trick. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022300023.

Here’s another one sent to me by Annie T. over at MyKuali – thanks again! As I’ve said before, I love curry. There are so many different curries out there – sweet, spicy, slightly bland. Pastes, powders, sauces… It’s pretty enjoyable! I’ve been really enjoying reviewing curries from this region – Malaysia and Singapore – wonderful places that make some awesome curry instants! This one purports to be ‘xtra pedas’ which translates to extra hot. Let’s see if this stuff is really spicy or not.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains fish. To prepare, cook noodles for 2 minutes in 350ml of boiling water. Add contents of curry sachet and stir. Ingest accordingly!

Here’s the noodle block.

A single curry sachet? Yes – only one.

Wow – this is some colorful stuff. It’s got a really awesome odor as well! Smells like curry!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added shrimp, sweet onion and corn. The noodles are good – plump with a nice chewiness. The broth is very spicy and hot – not for the faint of heat! It has a good curry flavor to it. If you like spicy curry, check this one out. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022301358.

Wow – yeah this is a pretty rad commercial for Mamee.

I got an email a few weeks ago from Pinky Tham, Digital and Social Media Manager at Mamee Double-Decker, a Malaysian maker of instant noodles amongst other things. She was very interested in taking part in the Meet The Manufacturer spotlights, and it sounded good to me! This interview was conducted with Pierre Pang, Mamee Double-Decker General Group Manager and grandson of the founder.

THERAMENRATER> Thank you very much for agreeing to do this interview! Could we start off with some information about Mamee Double-Decker; when was Mamee Double Decker founded, where and by who?

MAMEE DOUBLE-DECKER> MAMEE Double-Decker is a Malaysia based manufacturing company that was founded in 1971 by Datuk Pang Chin Hin. It all started in a small historical state in Malaysia called Melaka and Datuk Pang Chin Hin started his interests in manufacturing his first product called MAMEE Monster noodles snacks and expanded it beyond to instant noodles, snacks and beverages.

TRR> For those of my readers who are not familiar with your line of products, could you tell us a little about them?

MDD> Our products from MAMEE Double-Decker are divided into 3 main categories that are instant noodles, snacks and beverages. For Instant Noodles, we have
Mamee Instant Noodles, Mamee Slrrrp and Mamee Chef. As for snacks, we have Mamee Monster (noodles snack), Corntoz (corn snacks) and Mister Potato. For beverages, we currently have Cheers (carbonated drinks), LiteYo (yogurt drink) and Nutrigen (cultured milk).

TRR> Can you tell us about the differences and new features of your MAMEE Chef line?

MDD> MAMEE Chef’s noodles are made using a special technique known as La Mian (Mi Tarik) or ‘pulled noodles’ technique that originated in China during the 15th century to give the noodles a springier texture. In its quest to create the perfect flavor, MAMEE teamed up with Dato’ Chef Ismail, a renowned celebrity chef locally and internationally. Together, MAMEE and Chef Ismail have created an original Thai Tom Yam recipe made with fresh ingredients, herbs and spices as MAMEE Chef’s debut flavor. The MAMEE Chef range also features other unique local flavors like Curry Laksa and Spicy Chicken Shiitake.

TRR> You not only make regular instant noodles that are cooked, but a line of snack noodles called Mamee Monster – can you tell us about them and about who this monster guy is – does he have a name?

MDD> MAMEE Monster snack is a fried noodles snack that is already cooked and you can eat it straight out of the packet. The blue monster is known as MAMEE Monster and he symbolizes having fun and represents how enjoyable the snack is. He has become quite an icon in the local market.

TRR> Is Mamee Doubledecker involved in the local community around you?

MDD> We are actively involved in local charity drives, orphanages and old folk’s homes with our Mamee Care Program.

TRR> Why do you think noodles are such a popular food?

MDD> Noodles have become popular due to a few factors like the convenience of cooking and the variety of textures and flavors that they come in. It is a good alternative to rice, especially for the Asian market. Also, we had some understanding from research that the variety of flavors for instant noodles and the tastiness of it become everybody’s quick fix choice.

TRR> You are located in Malaysia. Can you tell us a little about where you factory is and life there?

MDD> Our factory is located in one of the most historical states in Malaysia known as Melaka. Melaka used to be a port in the 15th century and this historical city centre has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Melaka is a city well visited by tourists locally and internationally. We also have a museum and restaurant known as MAMEE Jonker House on the popular Jonker street in Melaka to share our history.

TRR> Are there any new products that will be coming out soon that you could tell us about?

MDD> We have a few new flavors in our production pipeline now, catered for the local market with a tinge of surprise elements compared to our usual instant noodles.

TRR> You make an ‘Xtra’ and a ‘Berapi’ spicy curry noodle – which is hotter?

MDD> ‘Xtra Pedas” is the spiciest among both of the choices above

TRR> A lot of people wonder about the health factors (sodium, etc) when it comes to instant noodles. How do you recommend people made instant noodles a healthy part of their diet?

MDD> For our MAMEE Chef range, we make the soup based on paste form with real ingredients, which contain less MSG.

TRR> What was your first product?

MDD> MAMEE Monster Snack was our first product that we produced.

TRR> Where are your products available?

MDD> Our MAMEE Chef product is only currently available in Malaysia but it is in all the hypermarkets, supermarkets and general trade.

TRR> When you make noodles for yourself, do you add anything or have any recommendations?

MDD> I usually like to add an egg and some vegetables to make it a wholesome meal for a quick fix.

TRR> Are there popular recipes locals have come up with for your noodles?

MDD> In Melaka, there are stores that sell MAMEE Goreng (Fried MAMEE Noodles); they will stir fry the noodles with egg, vegetables and put the paste as seasoning.

TRR> Are certain products enjoyed on particular holidays?

MDD> We noticed that during school holidays, our noodles are particularly more popular. It could due to the kids going around and travelling with their families.

TRR> Have there been any flavors you’ve thought of producing that never made it to market?

MDD> Our R&D always proposes a list of new flavors for us to try and evaluate on what would be the best flavor for local and international markets. At times depending on likeability, we will launch the flavor or keep improving the recipe.

TRR> Is Mamee Doubledecker tech savvy? Are there any apps for mobile phones we should know about?

MDD> At MAMEE Double-Decker, we are just starting to explore technology more. We currently have our Facebook page for MAMEE Chef here: https://www.facebook.com/mymameechef

TRR> Thank you very much for this opportunity to learn more about your company and its products!

There you have it straight from the source! So we begin another Meet The Manufacturer, and only the second from Malaysia – this should be fun! Let’s begin!

Meet The Manufacturer: #1348: Mamee Instant Vermicelli Tom Yam Flavour

I felt like something seafood today and thought this would fit the bill. One thing I’ve always wondered about – so what’s the difference between Tom Yam and Toom Yum, if any? Here’s what Wikipedia had to say about it:

Tom yum or tom yam (Lao: ຕົ້ມຍຳ [tôm ɲam]; Thai: ต้มยำ, [tôm jam]) is a spicy clear soup typical in Central Thailand. Tom yum is widely served in neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and has been popularised around the world.

Literally, the words “tom yum” are derived from two Tai words: “tom” and “yam”. “Tom” refers to boiling process, while “yam” refers to a kind of Lao and Thai spicy and sour salad. Thus, “tom yum” is a Lao and Thai hot and sour soup. Indeed, tom yum is characterised by its distinct hot and sour flavours, with fragrant herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and crushed chili peppers.

In neighbouring countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, the name tom yum is used widely for various spicy soups which can differ greatly from true Lao and Thai tom yum soup. As a result, people are often confused by the disparities.

Commercial tom yum paste is made by crushing all the herb ingredients and stir frying in oil. Seasoning and other preservative ingredients are then added. The paste is bottled or packaged and sold around the world. Tom yum flavoured with the paste may have different characteristics from that made with fresh herb ingredients. The soup often includes meats such as chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp.

So basically, it’s just a difference in spelling, not a different dish. Well that’s good to know. I must say it’s a little funny how they’re saying in the article that in Malaysia it’s spelled tom yum; I’m looking at a package saying tom yam. Well, regardless, I’m hungry and ready for some noodles!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains dried prawn. To prepare, cook the noodle block in 400cc of boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then add contents of seasoning sachets. Enjoy!

A fine powder.

A seasoned oil sachet.

Looks and smells great.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added chives, coriander (cilantro), fish balls, shrimp, sweet onion, Fresno chilli pepper and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning. The noodles end up being very light and airy with a nice fluffy texture despite their superfine gauge. The broth has a great tom yam taste – spicy and citrussy and satisfying. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. Mie goreng is one of my favorites – – noodles with a sweet, salty and spicy flavor. To be honest, it was mie goreng that really got me fanatical about instant noodles many years ago. Let’s have a look at this Malaysian take on an Indonesian standard.

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself). To prepare, fill to line with boiling water. After a few minutes, use the drain holes in the lid to drain off the water. Add the contents of the powder and oil/sauce sachets and stir well. Garnish with the crunchy bits and enjoy!

Here’s detail of the foil lid (click image to enlarge).

Included fork!!!

The noodle block.

Powder seasoning sachet.

Has a very light texture.

A dual liquid sachet – sweet soy sauce and oil on the left and chilli sauce on the right.

Both of the liquid components together.

The crunchy element!

They’re crunchy and really delicious!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added fried egg, baked chicken with garlic salt and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning and sweet onion. The noodles have some good chew to them and a nice gauge. The flavor is more sweet than spicy and then the spiciness kicks in gently; not an onslaught. The little crunchy bits give an added extra that is just right. This is excellent mie goreng – 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 9555022301600.

The 2013 top ten list I did was highlighted by two flavors at the very top: laksa and curry. Here we find both together! This is one of Mamee’s new Mamee Chef line of premium instant noodles. They use a technology that emulates ‘la mian,’ or hand-pulled noodles. I went to the store yesterday to see if I could find some nice acompaniments for this special pack – let’s check out how laksa and curry play together!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). May contain traces of fish. To prepare, add the noodle block and garnish sachet to 400ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes, stirring gently. Add in the liquid and powder sachet contents, stir gently, and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The powder soup base.

Has a very light and fluffy texture.

The paste sachet.

This is neat stuff – has a satin-like look to it.

The garnish sachet.

Lots of chive and some tofu puff!

Finished (click on image to enlarge). Added a white shrimp, tofu puff, Chinese long bean and sweet onions. The noodles came out extremely nice – gauge and texture are magnificent – Nice chew and mouth-feel. The broth is superb – has a nice curry flavor that is not too strong but very present. The broth has a heartiness to it and a nice heat level; pretty accessible for most folks I would say. I really like the strong cumin flavor as well. The garnish was nice – it included green onion as well as tofu puff which hydrated and was almost identical to the tofu puff I added, minus the size of course. Delectable! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. Mamee Monster is Mamee’s line of snack noodles. I’ve been really wanting to try these for a long time. Snack noodles are noodles that are seasoned and crushed and eaten without any cooking; kind of like potato chips or corn chips. I’ve seen these online quite a few times and always though hey – look it’s a blue monster and it’s instant noodles – rad!! So let’s have a look at this popular Malaysian snack.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. This is a package that contains ten smaller packages.

Here’s one of the individual packages (click to enlarge).

Here’s the back of one of the individual packs (click image to enlarge). To prepare, open pack, sprinkle seasoning, crunch it up and shake. Eat!

The snack noodle block.

Here’s one of the little seasoning sachets.

A very small amount of seasoning, but then again it’s a very small noodle block.

Finished (click image to enlarge). The noodles are nice and crunchy. They have that lightness you would expect from an uncooked instant noodle, but not really oily as some can be. The flavoring is light and has a salty and almost sesame oil kind of flavor to it. Good stuff – 4.0 out of 5.0 stars as far an instant noodle snacks go.

Mamee makes two extra spicy curry varieties – this one and one called Xtra Pedas which I reviewed a short while back. Of the two, this Berapi is not as spicy, but looks like it’s pack a punch! Curry sounds good – let’s dig in!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, boil 400ml water. Drop the noodle block in and cook for two minutes. Add contents of the seasoning sachet and stir. You’re ready for some curry noodles!

The noodle block.

The lone soup base sachet.

The soup base powder has an absolutely wonderful curry scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added tofu puff, hard boiled egg, sweet onion, chives, coriander (cilantro), baked chicken with garlic salt and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning and Fresno chilli peppers. The noodles came out nicely with a decent chew and they really slurped up the broth which I like. The broth has a rich curry flavor and is pretty hearty even though there’s no oil sachet. I liked it a lot! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022300207.

Today we have a bright green package – vegetarian flavor. It seems most product lines have at least one variety that’s vegetarian. The approximations of what a general ‘vegetable’ tastes like however has differed from brand to brand, from the vile to the exalted tasty treat. This one’s made with the ‘Mi Tarik’ technology at Mamee’s factory. This is where they emulate the technique of hand-pulling noodles with their equipment. Hand pulling noodles is interesting; the chef starts with a long thick roll, doubles it up, flours it, then swings it around a bit. This is repeated, doubling the amount of strands every time until there are a couple hundred noodles. I’ll put a video at the end showing someone doing this. Anyways, let’s give these vegetarian noodles a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be vegetarian. To prepare, cook the noodles in 400ml boiling water for 2 minutes. Stir in contents of both sachets and enjoy!

The noodle block.

Soup base sachet.

A light powder.

A liquid ingredient sachet.

Corn oil.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added Chinese long beans, corn, carrots, peas, sweet onion, chives, fried won ton chips my sister brought me back from Hawaii and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning. The noodles are nice and fat and springy. Very good. The flavor broth has a kind of buttery taste to me but with maybe a broccoli or green vegetable aftertaste. It’s quite good – better than expected, what with my experience overall of vegetarian varieties. 3.75 out of 5.0.

In the last year, I’ve got to say I’ve had the fortune to learn about and try a lot of new additions to instant noodles. Most of them have been seafood related – which I’m really lucky to have access to. I’ve gotten many emails asking where to find kamaboko or fish cake etc – I always thought all of those things were easily accessed by all, but as it turns out, I’m lucky to live in an area with lots of Asian grocery stores that specialize in such things. The latest I’ve been really enjoying are fish balls, particularly ones from Singapore that I get at a store that’s a short walk away. I usually only buy a couple, and the seafood counter guys usually look at me a little funny; “5 pounds?” they’ll ask. “No – just five fish balls.” My son and I walked over a couple of weeks ago and he wanted to buy me a whole pound of fish balls which I thought was very nice of him – and so I let him ask them himself. Then, my eight year old boy kind of puffed out his chest and exclaimed “excuse me – I would like one pound of those fish balls please!” Definitely a proud moment for me – sounded so authoritative! When we got home, I boiled some up and let him try – I received a resounding “yuck!” and a look of disgust. At least he tried them – he’s more a fan of macaroni and cheese and pizza, but I try to get him to try new things as much as possible. But I digress. Today’s noodle review will include the last of the fish balls from that trip to the store. I’m going to also follow the microwave instructions for this one, something I don’t usually do. Let’s see how it goes!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp.

Here’s the lid (click image to enlarge). To prepare, add all sachet contents. Add water to line (approx 350ml) and microwave for ‘at least’ 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

An included fork!

The noodle block.

Powder soup base.

Nice deep color.

Paste sachet.

Has a spicy scent.

The solid ingredient sachet.

Looks like shrimp, green onions and some peppers!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added fish balls with BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning, coriander (cilantro), sweet onion, chives and Fresno chilli pepper. The noodles came out really well. The ‘at least 3 minutes’ mention in the directions let me play a little bit with the timing, and I would say optimum is a stir at 3 minutes then 30 seconds more. The noodles are just right – nicely cooked and gorged on the broth. The broth is the real star in this one – nice and strong citrus and spicy flavors abound and it has such a nice color to it. The garnish of vegetables and shrimp come out very nicely – the veggies are excellent as is the shrimp. Truly an excellent cup of noodles – 4.75 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022303284.

Looks like today is going to be one of the nicest weather-wise yet this year. Here in the northwest, it’s been raining. A lot. We had the wettest March on record last month, which has hindered my exercise. I usually take a mile or two walk everyday, but that’s fallen by the wayside as of late. Definitely have been feeling the effects of not walking… So off I go!

I’m back. A good day for walking. Now I’m hungry! Rice vermicelli has one really redeeming quality – it’s very low in fat. If you’re looking for something on the lower calorie side, rice vermicelli is a good thing to check out! Let’s see how this one comes out.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. to prepare, cook for 2-34 minutes in 400ml boiling water. Add sachet contents and stir. Enjoy! One thing I like to do is use a pair of kitchen scissors to make them into a more manageable length, but that’s just me.

A nest of rice vermicelli.

The powder soup base sachet.

A light flecked powder.

The seasoned oil sachet.

Has an onion scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sweet onion, chicken baked with Lindberg-Snider Red Baron Barbecue seasoning, chives, hard boiled egg and Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt. The noodles are surprisingly gorged with broth and have a nice almost fluffy texture I enjoyed. The broth has a nice chicken flavor – the oil goes a long way in the flavor. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. The garnish sachet.

Lots of greenery as well as nice chunks of shiitake and chilli pepper.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added Fresno chilli pepper, shiitake mushroom and chicken sauteed with some AGV sweet chilli sauce. The noodles are really good with a nice firmness and chew. They’re definitely premium. The broth has a strong spicy component and good chicken and mushroom flavor. The veggies didn’t hide and they were good – the shiitake was nicely hydrated. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 9555022303246.

Meet The Manufacturer: #1357: Mamee Mie Goreng Indonesia Spicy Sambal Flavour

This is the second of the two Mie Goreng Indonesia cup varieties Mamee Double-Decker sent me for Meet The Manufacturer. The first one was really good! This one sounds good too. Sambal is spicy stuff! I like spicy. Today before I do the review, I’m going to trek up to our local Indonesian grocery Waroeng Jajanan. They clued me in about a couple of great additions to mie goreng – Kerapuk Aci and BonCabe! Kerapuk Aci is a big round Indonesian cracker made with tapioca and other ingredients. It’s crunchy and goes really well with mie goreng when I’ve made it in the past. BonCabe is a spicy chilli seasoning – bits of chilli powder, flake, some salt and crunchy bits as well as other spices are in it and it’s great stuff! Off I go to the Indonesian grocery to find some additions…

I’m back! So the area I live in is called the Edmonds International District. Lots of great stores to get stuff for noodles! They put up these new lanterns and signs all over the place – it’s official! Pretty cool. Got what I was looking for at Waroeng Jajanan and so I begin the preparation – let’s give this one a try!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add boiling water to inner line and let sit for 3 minutes. Using the holes in the lid, drain off the water. Add contents of the sachets (powder and liquid) and stir well. Add garnish and enjoy!

Here’s the lid (click image to enlarge).

An included fork! These are neat ones – they slide and click.

A slightly granular powder.

A dual sachet of oil and sweet soy sauce on the left and chilli sauce on the right.

The garnish sachet.

Crunchy pieces!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added Rotary Kerapuk Aci, BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning, hard boiled egg, Fresno chilli pepper, sweet onion, ABC Manis Pedas and shrimp. The noodles came out so nicely – they have a great character of chew and whilst not in a broth, they’re not dry after being drained. The flavor is wonderful – spicy and tasty with that sweet-hot kick I love about mie goreng. The crunchy bits rounds everything out soundly. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. UPC bar code 9555022301617.

Meet The Manufacturer: #1358: Mamee Mi Segera SLLRRRP! Perencah Asam Laksa

I’ve tried a couple of laksa varieties now and thought I should have a look at this one. There are a few different types of laksa, this one being asam laksa – but what’s asam laksa all about? I consulted Wikipedia and here’s what it had to say:

Asam laksa is a sour, fish-based soup. It is listed at number 7 on World’s 50 most delicious foods complied by CNN Go in 2011.[5] Asam (or asam jawa) is the Malay word for tamarind, which is commonly used to give the stock its sour flavor. It is also common to use asam keping (also known as asam gelugor), dried slices of sour mangosteen, for added sourness. The modern Malay spelling is asam, though the spelling assam is still frequently used.

The main ingredients for asam laksa include shredded fish, normally kembung fish or mackerel, and finely sliced vegetables including cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, common mint, “daun kesum” (Vietnamese mint or laksa mint) and pink bunga kantan (torch ginger). Asam laksa is normally served with either thick rice noodles or thin rice noodles (vermicelli). And topped off with “petis udang” or “hae ko” (蝦羔), a thick sweet prawn/shrimp paste.

Sounds interesting! Perhaps a trip to the store to find some mint leaves and mackerel may be in order today. Sounds like fun to me!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains fish and crustacean. To prepare, add the noodle block to 350ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add contents of the seasoning sachet and stir. Enjoy!

Has an interesting scent – very curious about this one.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added mint leaves, pineapple, sweet onion, Fresno chilli peppers, cucumber, shredded mackerel, shrimp paste, and ginger (couldn’t find torch ginger so had to compromise with kizami shoga). The noodles are as they were before in these SLLLRRP! varieties – they suck up that broth and have a great texture – very enjoyable. The broth has a very different taste. It’s a bit sour and tart, but it’s pretty darn good. Definitely worth a try! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 9555022300214.

A neat series of Mamee SLLRRRP! advertisements – these are for the spicy ones!

The other day, I reviewed the pack version of this one and found it to be absolutely excellent. Today, I’m going to try the cup. I’m glad I had two different versions as I found something on Mamee’s page that I was really excited about.

So check this out (click image to enlarge). Sounds really good, doesn’t it? Pineapple curry? I was hoping maybe they could send a sample so I could include it in Meet The Manufacturer – never seen a variety that actually had pineapple in it! Well as it turns out, it was an April Fool’s Day joke from Mamee and I was fooled! But pineapple curry still sounded good. I decided I’d use it as an addition today. Let’s give this one a try!

Here are the side panels (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add water to line as well as all sachet contents. Microwave for 3 minutes, astir, and enjoy!

Here’s detail from the lid (click image to enlarge).

Included fork!

The noodle block.

Powder seasoning base sachet.

Has a very nice curry scent.

Liquid base sachet.

As in the pack version, the liquid has a satin sheen to it.

The garnish sachet.

Bits of tofu puff, pepper and green onion.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added tofu puffs, prawn flavor fish balls, pineapple chunks, sweet onion and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning. The noodles came out excellent – pretty much identical to the packaged version. The broth and garnish as well were great – rich curry flavor and premium garnishes including little tofu puff bits and pepper. I can definitely say this is the best instant cup I’ve ever had. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. As for pineapple in this one, it’s really great (not considered in review score). UPC bar code 9555022303307.

Here’s a video with people from Mamee Chef going to Disneyland! My wife’s got a relative who helped build Main Streeet at Disneyland back in the day and his name is on one of the windows! Pretty neat!
