Meet The Manufacturer: #1360: Mamee Monster BBQ Flavour Snack Noodle

Mamee Monster is a snack noodle. Snack noodles are instant noodles that aren’t cooked, but rather crushed into snack bits and enjoyed as a crunchy snack. I’d always wanted to review them and I got my first chance to try them a few days back when I reviewed the chicken flavor variety. First I’ll show your this, the ten pack and then the individual pack. Let’s check this one out!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, take an individual pack and crush the noodles inside. Sprinkle the seasoning into the bag and shake. Enjoy!

Here’s one of the individual packs.

The seasoning comes in small sachets that are joined by perforations.

A small amount of powder.

This Meet The Manufacturer has been a lot of fun. Over the last year, I’ve been finding myself enjoying curries and tom yum varieties a lot more, and Mamee makes some great ones. Thisd is the last of the Mamee Chef varieties I have to review – the pack version of the Creamy Tom Yam. I reviewed the cup version a week or so ago. Let’s see how this one fares.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains shrimp. To prepare, add the noodle block and garnish sachet contents to 400ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Add the remaining sachet contents and stir. Enjoy!

Has that really neat satin look to it.

The garnish sachet.

Nice looking veggies and shrimp.

Today’s the last of the Mamee Double-Decker Meet The Manufacturer. It’s been really neat trying all these varieties – not a single re-review – really shows how few of their products I’d tried previusly. Today I thought I’d go with one of my favorite all time flavors in the world – curry. There are so many different takes on curry in the world – Malaysian, Singaporean, Japanese, South Korean, Indian and British to name a few. Let’s check this one out as we bid a fond farewell to this 15 day journey through some of Mamee’s products.

The back of the package (click image top enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add the noodle block to 400ml of boiling water and cook for two minutes. Add contents of the soup base sachet and stir. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

Smells like rich curry!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added chicken I breaded with a mix of Panko and BonCabe Level 10 chilli seasoning and baked, sweet onion and wonton chips. The noodles are just right – neat gauge and chew. The broth has a very tasty curry flavor without much if any spiciness. This is perfect for the curry lover who doesn’t want their mouth on fire. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.UPC bar code 9555022301990.

We end with a video all about Mamee Double-Decker.

New Product Samples From Mamee Chef

During my trip to Malaysia, I got a notification that I had a package from Malaysia back at my apartment! It was kind of funny; when we were in Kuala Lumpur’s airport, we saw DHL jetys on the tarmac – could be the same ones that brought these my way! These are brand new Mamee Chef varieties! Let’s look inside!

This is a first – I’ve seen CBP/USDA open a box and inspect individual packs, but not inspect the content of an individual pack before. At least they only did this with one of them.

Gold Recipe eh? This stuff must be really good – I’m a huge fan of their Tom Yum and Curry Laksa and they don’t say Gold Recipe. Hmm!

Ah – now check this out. So they’re both the same flavor, but one has regular gauge instant noodles (which they call Mi Tarik) and these here have superfine rice noodles (called bihun). Now, one thing I found in Malaysia was that a lot of the time in a noodle soup, you’d find the regular gauge yellow noodles and then a small amount of the bihun playing in there too. I’ll be giving these a try soon! Thank you very much!

#1508: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa

Today we have a new one from Mamee Chef. Mamee Chef’s products made not only the Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2014 list, but also topped the Top Ten Instant Noodle Cups Of All Time 2014 list. Really exceptional stuff! They have come out with two varieties in this flavor: one with their ‘mi tarik’ noodles (noodles made in a way to emulate hand-pulled noodles) and a version that comes with bihun (pronounced bee-hoon, it’s a very thin rice noodle). Today I’m reviewing the wheat noodle variety.

This one is a bit different; I’ve not seen seribu rasa in my instant noodle packs before. It means ‘thousand flavors.’ The fully translated name of this one would be Mamee Chef Thousand Flavors Curry Instant Noodles.

When abroad in Malaysia, I saw not only a wheat noodle in many noodle dishes, but a small amount of the bihun as well. Since Mamee Chef sent me a multitude of packs of both these varieties, I thought today I’d toss in a small amount of the bihun with these. Granted I’m only reviewing the base product shown here, but hopefully in the finished image you’ll see what I’m talking about. When I review the bihun variety soon, I’ll just be using the rice noodle in that one. Let’s get to it!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains fish and crustaceans. To prepare, cook noodles for 3 minutes in 400ml boiling water. Add in contents of dry sachets and stir. Add in contents of paste sachet and stir. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

Soup base sachet.

Has a seafood scent to it and slight sweetness.

A sachet of non-dairy creamer.

A decent amount of powder.

The paste sachet.

Smells quite nice – curry!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added green chilli paddi, about a sixteenth of a block of bihun,  hard boiled egg, shrimp, sliced squid, tau pok (tofu puff) and Chinese long beans. The noodles are excellent – they have a round shape and just a hair wider gauge than your standard instant. They are lightly chewy with a subtle crumble that works. The broth is just wonderful! A very strong curry flavor and spiciness – very rich. The broth ands up with a serious thickness as well. This was just excellent – worthy of being called Gold Recipe I’d say! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars easy. EAN bar code 9555022303482.

Here’s a few of the other varieties Mamee makes – Tom Yum, Curry and Vegetarian.

#1518: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Bihun Kari Seribu Rasa

$

A week or so ago, I reviewed Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa. This however is Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Bihun Kari Seribu Rasa. What’s the difference? Well, ‘mi’ means noodles – as in instant wheat flour noodles. Bihun is the Malaysian term for rice vermicelli. Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about bihun:

In Malaysia, the rice vermicelli can be called and founded as Mihun, Mi hoon, Mee Hoon, Bihun, or Bee Hoon.Bihun Sup is a Malay style dish, mixed with spiced beef broth or chicken broth. Sometimes it came with sambal kicap (pounded bird’s eye chilli mixed with dark soy sauce) as condiment.

  • Bihun Kari mixed with curry, added with mung bean sprout, fried tofu and red chillies sambal.
  • Bihun soto is in a yellow spicy chicken broth, served with chicken and potato cutlet.
  • Hokkien mee throughout Malaysia varies considerably due to regional differences.
  • Bihun Tom Yam is mixed with tom yam.
  • Laksa Sarawak is mixed with a base of sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and optionally lime. Ingredients such as bean sprouts, (sliced) fried tofu or other seafood are not traditional but are sometimes added.
  • Mi Siam is a stir-fried style dish.
This being a bihun kari, I’m going to try and dress it up accordingly. I will say I’ve never been a huge fan of rice vermicelli, but then again I don’t think I’ve really had any instant varieties that were curry broth based, so let’s see what we have with this one!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains crustaceans. To prepare, add bihun to 400ml boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Add in dry sachets and stir. Add in paste sachet to taste. Enjoy!

As you can see, bihun is a very fine rice vermicelli.

The seasoning powder sachet.

Has a nice prawn scent.

A sachet of non-dairy creamer.

A decent amount of the fine powder.

The curry paste sachet.

A good quantity and wonderful scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge).Added shredded crab stick, mung bean sprouts, coriander, tau pok and hard boiled egg. The bihun is indeed very thin and wispy. It’s slightly dry, as rice vermicelli usually is and that’s always been my complaint. However the broth is rich and spicy and full of flavor. The oiliness and thickness of the broth coats the bihun very well and makes it definitely the most enjoyable rice vermicelli I’ve had. 4.5 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9555022303925.

Still got some duck left from our special anniversary lunch the other day! It’s pretty rare that I have any duck at all! Let’s check out this Perisa Itik (duck flavor) instant noodle from Mamee!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook for 2 minutes. Add in contents of sachets and stir gently. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry soup base sachet.

Has a nice braised duck scent.

A seasoned oil sachet.

Has an onion scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added braised duck leg, coriander and bean sprout. The noodles have a very nice chew and gauge – typical of Mamee’s line. The broth has a very nice braised duck flavor and even a little spicy hit to it. The oil adds the right touch. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.  EAN bar code 9555022302003.

This is really neat – so on the cups and packs of Mamee Chef’s Laksa Kari, they’ve got my logo. The cup was #1 on my annual cups list and the packs made my top ten for 2014. In the commercial, you can see the logo twice – once when he holds up the cup towards the end and on the package at the very end in the upper right corner. Pretty neat!

Re-Review: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa

I woke up this morning in the mood for something curry. I was looking in my stores of instant noodles today and found this Mamee Chef Gold Recipe. I’ve reviewed it before, but I thought it would make a good breakfast and would be neat to re-review. I really liked the name of this one – seribu rasa means a thousand flavors, which immediately makes me think of thousand island dressing. Of course, this isn’t anything like thousand island dressing. Let’s have a look inside and see what makes this instant noodle tick.

The seasoning powder sachet.

Has a kind of seafood scent.

A sachet of non-dairy creamer.

Lots of ultra fine powder.

The paste sachet.

Has a really great scent – very rich.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added sliced squid, fish ball, shrimp, coriander and mung bean sprouts. The noodles are made with Mamee’s ‘Mi Tarik’ technology, which is supposed to emulate hand-pulling. The texture and chewiness of these are very good – I would say that the gauge is thinner than hand-pulled noodles I’ve had in the past though. Nevertheless, they are exemplary. The broth has a really great flavor that reminds me of cumin – I really like cumin as a component of curries and this works very well. It has a warm stick-to-your-ribsy kind of flavor and scent and really feels like comfort food. There is spiciness, but not so overwhelming that it kills the mood. This is really great stuff and again as I said in the original review, definitely worthy of the name Gold Recipe. My regards to Chef Ismail! 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555022303482.

The Ramen Rater's top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition

The top ten instant noodles list is an annual post I do which is always quite a treat for me.  I started reviewing back in 2002, but I really got going with it in June of 2010 – I’ve done nearly 1,600 reviews since then. It still boggles my mind that after trying so many, the industry continues to innovate and bring flavors forth that truly amaze me. With that, here are my absolute favorites – The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodles Of All Time 2015 Edition.

This year I also made a video to accompany the list.

#10: A-Sha Veggie Noodle Tomato Noodle With Vine Ripened Tomato Sauce – Taiwan

This was a fairly recent review; I hadn’t expected Taiwan to be on the top ten list. But there’s no denying – this is absolutely marvelous stuff. The noodles have a great gauge – broad, flat and soft with a light chew. The great part is the tomato flavor – when I opened the sachet of sauce the whole room smelled like fresh tomatoes. Not only that, there’s more than enough sauce to flavor all of the noodles. Original review

#9: Maruchan Gotsumori Sauce Yakisoba – Japan

#9: Maruchan Gotsumori Sauce Yakisoba - Japan

Marchuan’s first time on the top ten instant noodles list. This big tray of yakisoba was a very nice surprise. First, there’s a lot of noodles here – easily enough for two. Second, the flavor has a little hint of spiciness. Thirdly, the cabbage hydrated very nicely with a tantalizing crunch. Finally, the inclusion of Kewpie mayonnaise sealed the deal for me. Original review

#8: Mama Oriental Style Instant Noodles Green Curry Flavour Jumbo Pack – Thailand

#8: Mama Oriental Style Instant Noodles Green Curry Flavour Jumbo Pack - Thailand

The noodles are Mama’s great brown noodles – they don’t suck up too much broth and have a tension I really like. Not only that – there’s a decent amount of them! Then there’s the broth whose rich green curry flavor satisfies with excellent heat and flavor. Original review

#7: MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle (New Improved Taste) – Malaysia

The noodles are great – gauge is just a little wider than standard. The broth is a work of art; the strength of sweet prawn flavor is balanced with a well-tempered amount of heat.
It’s thick and has a perfect oiliness to it. To top it off, the fried onions are the best I’ve encountered in the instant noodle world; they are of good size and plentiful. Original review

#6: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa – Malaysia

With their special Mi Tarik technology that emulated traditional hand-pulled noodles, you get a great texture and chewiness as well as elasticity with this noodle. The broth however was what made this a favorite of mine – it has a comfort food feel to it that seems to come from a component that reminds me of strong cumin. Worthy of the name Gold Recipe. Original review

#5: Prima Taste Singapore Curry La Mian – Singapore

For the third year in a row on the top ten instant noodles list, this amazing curry has made the top ten instant noodles list. This one has very thick chewy noodles – they take a little longer to cook but it’s worth the wait. The broth is truly luxuriant – with two large sachets of paste and coconut powder. Original review

#4: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa – Malaysia

#4: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa - Malaysia

CarJEN’s first time on the top ten instant noodles list. This one was particularly interesting to me. First, the noodles are quite good – standard gauge with just a little extra backbone. The broth is superb – firstly, the coconut creamer gives a nice richness. Then, Nyonya Curry Paste adds a nice flavor – sweet and colorful. Then there’s the sambal dipping sauce – it had nice bits of shrimp as well as a spicy sweet and citrus taste that was amazing. Original review

#3: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian – Singapore

#3: Prima Taste Singapore Laksa La Mian - Singapore

Third time on the top ten instant noodles list. The noodles are thick and have a great chewiness to them – definitely on the premium end of the stick and very impressive. The broth is a deep and flavorful one, with a richness to it that’s really quite amazing. It’s thick from the coconut powder which gives it a sort of milkiness. The paste had all sorts of things going on – has a great homemade ‘stewed for hours’ kind of feel. It’s a little spicy and a little sweet and must be tried firsthand. Masterfully executed. – Original review

#2: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle (New Improved Taste) – Malaysia

These were number one on last years top ten instant noodles list. The noodles seem a little more elastic and fuller this time – just a little more. The chew and mouthfeel are excellent. The broth is just amazing stuff again – definitely very spicy and strong garlic going on. The broth is darker as well. A couple little changes but still just as wonderful as ever! Original review

#1: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Noodle – Malaysia

The noodles are just as always – nice gauge that has a great chewiness and quantity – just right. The broth – wow. It definitely has that full on flavor I experienced in Langkawi. The broth is not only strong but it’s got a thickness to it, and has that kind of aroma and consistency of a broth that’s been stewing all day long. Strong spicy heat, lemongrass and shrimp notes play throughout as well as a nice bit of sweetness as well. This is spectacular. Original review / Special Top Ten Re-Review

Thanks for viewing the top ten instant noodles list for 2015! I get a lot of pleasure out of reviewing instant noodles and experiencing the flavors from far flung lands! The top ten list comes out annually on the Monday closest to April 20th. The top ten instant noodles list is solely based upon my taste buds, who are made very happy by these products. Please contact me if you are interested in using this list for commercial use.

#1664: Mamee Oriental Noodles Prawn Flavour

Picked this one up this year at the PriceSmart foods in Richmond, BC in Canada during my birthday trip! This is definitely an export version. How do you know? Well, look at the myriad of languages here – French, German, Arabic and English are all here on the front. A lot of companies make export versions and sometimes they’ll make a spicy version which for their local market is spicier than for the export market. There’s so much that goes into figuring out how to tune flavors and such for different places. Let’s check out these Mamee Prawn Flavour instant noodles!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. T prepare, boil 400ml water and add noodles. Cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in contents of sachet and enjoy!

The noodle block.

The soup base sachet.

A very light powder.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added prawns, mung bean sprouts and coriander. The noodles were very run of the mill and kind of a standard baseline instant. The broth had a kind of prawn flavor but didn’t jump out at me and say prawn. Disappointing. 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.UPc bar code 051325111087.

Didn’t expect such a big box! Let’s have a look inside!

Oh wow – lots of goodies in here!

Rack and cup versions of Mamee Chef’s new Lontong Flavour instant noodles! I’m still trying to exactly understand what Lontong is completely, but from what I get out of what I’ve read, Lontong is compressed rice in a banana leaf. It sounds kind of like topokki, but a little different. Sounds interesting! Really looking forward to trying it.

A new flavor of the famous Mamee Monster snacks – Pedas! Pedas means spicy!

Mamee also makes a line of snack crisps – these are their Perfecto varieties – sea salt, sour cream and onion and a spicy chilli one. I’ve tried the sea salt and chilli varieties so far and really like them.

They also now make special popcorn! There’s caramel and chocolate covered varieties. What we liked about these is that they were just drenched with flavor; they had just the right amount. Thanks to everyone at Mamee Chef for sending these along! Can’t wait to review the new varieties!

I’m always searching around the Internet and checking up on different instant noodle companies to see if they’ve got something new coming to the market! I saw that Mamee Chef has just released this new Lontong Flavour variety and asked if I could get some samples – and I did!  So, what’s this Lontong all about? Here’s what the nice folks at Mamee Chef had to say about it:

Lontong is a popular dish among Malays, made of compressed rice cake wrapped inside a banana leaf found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. It is commonly called nasi himpit (“pressed rice”) that goes with a coconut based soup. The dish is more like a vegetable stew with chopped cabbage, turnip and carrots. It is one of the Muslims’ favourite traditional Raya dish that comes with a variety of cooking style namely Lontong Johor, Lontong Lodeh, Lontong Sotong and so forth. The overall taste of lontong is bland and neutral, it depends on other ingredients to give taste through spices and sauces. They include things such as fried tempeh, fried tofu, boiled eggs, dried cuttlefish sambal, fried spicy shredded coconut (serunding kelapa), fried chicken etc.

The highlight of the product is Dato’ Chef Ismail’s Lontong paste that makes our Lontong has the authentic flavor, which makes Mamee Chef Lontong as close to the real dish as possible. I have attached the press release for your better understanding on Mamee Chef Lontong. Hope you enjoy the Mamee Chef Lontong as much as we do!

Definitely sounds interesting! Let’s open this cup of the new Mamee Chef Lontong Flavour!

Here’s detail of the side panels (click image to enlarge). Contains prawn. To prepare, empty sachets into cup and add 350ml boiling water. Cover and let steep for 3 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

An included fork!

The noodle block.

A dry sachet.

Soup base powder and garnish in one.

A sachet of non dairy creamer.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added fried tofu, shrimp, Chinese long bean, white onion, mung bean sprouts and hard boiled egg. The noodles came out exceptionally well and perfectly hydrated. The gauge was good and had a decent chew to them. The broth is first off a lot of fun to look at; the red and cream colors are really good looking. The broth has a creamy and spicy taste with lots of nice pieces of pepper ring floating in it. This was top notch stuff – 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555022304748.

What do corn dogs, sandwiches, burritos and instant noodle cups have in common? They’re all portable. People can’t seem to stay in one spot for very long; they want to carry their meals with them as they move about. Since the inception of the instant noodle cup in the early 70’s when Momofuku Ando saw people using coffee cups and hot water to steep their instant noodles and brought this concept to market, the noodle cup has become a ubiquitous icon in the daily lives of billions. Today, I present the best of the instant noodle cups I’ve tried in my over 1,700 instant noodle reviews. With that, please enjoy The Ramen Rater’s Top Ten Instant Noodle Cups Of All Time 2015 Edition.

#10: GaGa Mi Instan Cup Milk Chicken Soup – Indonesia

The noodles are thin and light – they hydrated perfectly and have a gentle chew. The broth is fantastic – it’s a creamy flavor full of chicken goodness, some onion hints, and a slight spiciness. Original review here

#9: Mama Instant Noodles Coconut Milk Flavour – Myanmar

This was my first ever review of a product from Myanmar. The noodles have a lightness to them which paired perfectly for this broth. Coconut flavor abounds with a richness and flavor that’s not overbearing or too sweet. It’s creamy and with just the right oiliness. Original review here

#8: Mamee Chef Creamy Tom Yam Flavour – Malaysia

The noodles are just right – nicely cooked and gorged on the broth. The broth is the real star in this one – nice and strong citrus and spicy flavors abound and it has such a nice color to it. The garnish of vegetables and shrimp come out very nicely – the veggies are excellent as is the shrimp. Truly an excellent cup of noodles. Original review here

#7: Eat & Go Rendang Beef Flavour Fried Instant Noodle – Indonesia

The noodles come out nice after steeping. They have a standard gauge and good cgewiness. The flavor is great – sweet. spicy and beefy! Excellent stuff – and if it wasn’t good enough already, the garnish adds a really good finish to things. This was a real treat to enjoy. Original review here

#6: Nongshim Shin Black Spicy Pot-au-feu Flavor Premium Noodle Soup – United States

First, Nongshim made Shin Ramyun which is still incredibly popular. Then they upgraded and came out with Shin Ramyun Black. Finally, Shin Black has made it into a cup – and it’s really good! Rich beef flavor and real beef along with thick ramyun noodles. Premium stuff! Original review here

#5: Mama Cup Yentafo Tom Yum Mohfai – Thailand

The noodles have the standard wonderful gauge and chew of the noodles that are in Mama cups. They have a nice texture and flavor to them. The broth is great – a nice color, spiciness and flavor that is a little sweet and very unique. Original review here

#4: Mamee Mie Goreng Indonesia Spicy Sambal Flavour – Malaysia

The noodles came out so nicely – they have a great character of chew and whilst not in a broth, they’re not dry after being drained. The flavor is wonderful – spicy and tasty with that sweet-hot kick I love about mie goreng. The crunchy bits rounds everything out soundly. Original review here

#3: Mamee Chef Lontong Flavour – Malaysia

The broth is first off a lot of fun to look at; the red and cream colors are really good looking. The broth has a creamy and spicy taste with lots of nice pieces of red pepper, and as always the ‘mi tarik’ noodles were just right. Very new and unique. Original review here

#2: Mama Instant Cup Noodles Seafood Pad Kee Mao Flavour – Thailand

The flavor is really quite good and can be summed as kind of a sweet seafood taste with a great bite of spiciness – and then this lingering flavor from the holy basil. It’s got a really different flavor I wish was present more often in instant noodle varieties. Original review here

#1: Mamee Chef Curry Laksa Flavour – Malaysia

There are some flavors erupting from Malaysia that are just fantastic and this instant noodle cup exudes them like a rock star. The noodles came out excellent – pretty much identical to the packaged version. The broth and garnish as well were great – rich curry flavor and premium garnishes including little tofu puff bits and pepper. I can definitely say this is the best instant cup I’ve ever had. This is the second year in a row Mamee Chef Curry Laksa has held the top spot.  Original review here

The last time I got samples from Mamee Doubledecker, they sent quite a few things along. They sent two of these ten packs of Mamee Monster as well! This is a new flavor – Pedas. Pefas means spicy! Let’s have a look at this one – and look – there’s a prize inside!

Here’s the back of the ten pack bag (click image to enlarge). Looks to be meat free but check for yourself. To prepare, take a pack and crush it while closed. Open and sprinkle one of the sopplied seasoning sachets into the pack. Close and shake it up. Enjoy!

One of the individual packs.

The noodle block.

A little seasoning sachet.

A small amount of powder for the little packs.

They sent two of the ten packs, so I got two different dinosaurs!

The front and back of the card. It says you can put the dinosaur in water and it’ll grow really big after a few days!

I’m thinking a Stegosaurus on the left and a Brontosaurus on the right? Not sure – been a while since I was a kid though…

After a full week in water, they got pretty big! Indeed, it was fun to have a look at their growth every day – 5 stars for fun!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added almonds, mango, banana chips and peanuts. I really like the crunch of the noodles; they seem a little different than the other Mamee Monster varieties; they’re really crispy, but maybe have a little more give to them. They have a nice spicy flavor to them which was great and a little bit of sweetness and more spiciness from the seasoning. As far as a snack goes, this gets 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555022304786.

When I visited Malaysia last October, I was asked by a newspaper reported when I thought a Malaysian top ten list might come out. I figured once I got to around 70 reviews I could probably put something together. As of today, I’ve reviewed 100 different varieties from Malaysia. What’s more, I am releasing this top ten list on Malaysia’s Independence Day! Hari Merdeka! Happy Birthday, Malaysia! I hope everyone enjoys this list, in my opinion the best of the best instant varieties Malaysia has to offer that I’ve tried yet.

#10: Ibumie Penang White CurryMee

Ibumie is a very popular brand in Malaysia. What I like about their CurryMee is that it covers all the bases: spicy, rich and flavorful curry. The levels of these prerequisite are such however that it’s accessible to most – not too spicy or strong. A good one to introduce people to Malaysian instant noodle flavor. Original review

#9: Ah Lai Penang Favourite White Curry Bihun

I found that the bihun version of Ah Lai’s White Curry was very enjoyable; the noodles come out just right and dance with the curry broth playfully. Balanced just right. Original review

#8: Mamee Chef Curry Laksa

Mamee Chef’s noodles use ‘mi tarik’ technology to emulate hand pulled noodles. Coupling that with a rich and tasty curry broth and garnish including tau pok, this is definitely one of my all time favorites. Original review

#7: The Bridge Penang White Curry Noodle

A noodle with excellent texture and chew along with a beautifully lustrous broth with strong flavor. Makes me wish I could’ve gotten more from Malaysia to bring home! Original review

#6: MyKuali Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodle

Hokkien Mee is a wonderfully unique flavor of Penang and is extremely well represented here. The broth is sweet and has a deep flavor of prawn as well as a spiciness. The provided fried onions are the best I’ve ever found in an instant noodle. Original review

#5: Mamee Chef Gold Recipe Mi Kari Seribu Rasa

This variety has it all – great noodles, a deep and beautiful color, and finally a flavor that makes me think of the exotic. Lots of cumin and other spices comer together here masterfully. Original review

#4: CarJEN Nyonya Curry Laksa

I’ve seen a lot of noodle packages but I must say this is by far the sexiest. What’s nice is that what’s inside is equally as awesome – a very tasty curry is augmented with coconut powder and a dipping sauce with nice bits of shrimp. Original review

#3: MyOri Malaysia Penang Green Curry Rice Vermicelli

This is something new I tried in the last few months that’s just left me speechless. The green curry broth is thick and so flavorful; perfect spiciness and perfect taste. What’s more, it pairs with rice vermicelli in a stunning way. Luxuriant and innovative. Original review

#2: MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

This is the variety and flavor that grabbed me and set my palate on Malaysia. The richness, thickness and strength of this broth is mind-blowing. The noodles are engorged on it and have a hearty gauge and chew. A real game changer. Original review

#1: MyKuali Penang Red Tom Yum Goong Noodle

This one takes the cake. It has such an authentic flavor; as soon as I tried it, I was whisked back to Langkawi – the thickness of this tom yum is amazing, as is its’ sweetness and spiciness. I half expect to find a stalk of lemongrass in the bowl. Original review

As always, if you know of a variety I should try, check THE BIG LIST to see if I already have, and if I haven’t, contact me! Hari Merdeka, Malaysia!

#1769: Mamee Chef Lontong Flavour

Close to 50 reviews ago I checked out Mamee Chef’s Longtong Flavour cup version and today I thought it was a good time to try their pack version. I would say that generally, I like packs better than cups. To me, a noodle that’s boiled for a little while tastes better than steeped. Of course there are exception out there, but it generally seems that way.Today is the first review since my wife and I got back from the hospital when my son was born. I uusally am quite a few reviews ahead of the game.

He’s about exactly 3 days old in this picture I just took. I’m amazed how powerful this little guy we named Miles is; seven and a half pounds of amazingness. Yeah, I think I could go on about Miles about as much as I could go on about noodles, except when I talk about him I just keep saying the words ‘cute’ and ‘perfect’ and ‘amazing’ alot. Anyways, he’s all of those things! Back to the lontong!

So I was kind of surprised that Wikipedia was a little short on info about lontong so I want to share how it’s described by Mamee Chef:

Let’s have a look!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Contains crustacean. To prepare, add noodle block to 400ml boiling water and cook 3 minutes. Add in contents of sachets and stir well. Enjoy!

The noodle block.

The dry seasoning sachet.

A light powder with bits in there.

A non dairy creamer sachet.

A superfine powder.

The paste sachet.

Has a nice scent.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added Fresno chilli peppers, coriander, mung bean sprouts, Dodo shrimp and fish balls and white onion. The noodles have that great Mamee Cheff texture to them – rounded and a good chew. The broth is really fascinating; has a nice heat that starts at the front of your mouth and then creeps back slowly to your throat and hangs out there. It’s got a nice creamy complexion and a strong flavor. What’s also neat are the tiny little cili padi rings that abound. 5.0 out of 5.0 stars. EAN bar code 9555022304731.

Instant noodle… snacks? Yeah! Snacks of all kinds have come from instant noodles – candy, crunchy bits, you name it. They’re popular all over Asia and also the United States; have you ever taken a pack of instant noodles, crushed them and added in the seasoning and shaken the bag up and eaten them like potato chips or popcorn? Well, this is popular elsewhere as well! Let’s check out my favorite instant noodle snacks from over 1,900 reviews. Enjoy!

#10: Wei Lih What’s That? Leisure Meatballs Spicy Chicken Flavor – Taiwan

They’re crunchy and light. They have a slight sweetness and a spiciness that is very slight but builds the more you eat. Original review

#9: Mamee Monster Snek Mi Perisa Ayam – Malaysia

2016_1_16_tts_003

The noodles are nice and crunchy. They have that lightness you would expect from an uncooked instant noodle, but not really oily as some can be. The flavoring is light and has a salty and almost sesame oil kind of flavor to it. Original review

#8: A-Sha Prince Katsu Snack Noodles – Taiwan

They’re very light and crunchy and have a nice salty and crunchy appeal to them. There’s a bit of a sweet and garlic or onion kind of thing going on as well as a hint of spiciness. Original review

#7: J.J. Snek Mi Perisa BBQ – Malaysia

The noodles are crunchy and have a nice flavor to them – very much reminding me of fried chicken from a well known restaurant chain. These were very good! Original review

#6: Samyang Foods Star Popeye Ramyun Snack – South Korea

It’s very crunchy and the noodles have a very light cinnamon note to them. The sugaryness of the rock candy brings this out in a nice way. Original review

#5: Mama Rangers Snack Noodles Shrimp Tom Yum Flavour – Myanmar

The snack noodle pieces are very short. The have a nice crunch to them. The flavor is that of a sweet tom yum, with a hint of spiciness, an unmistakable hit of lemongrass, and definitely tastes like sugary tom yum. It’s a nice flavor and was enjoyable. Original review

#4: Oyatsu Baby Star Snack Noodle Yakisoba Flavor – Japan

These short lengths of noodle are great. They’re light and crunchy. The flavor is that of yakisoba, so a little Worcestershire and salt and spices. It’s great stuff! Original review

#3: Ve Wong Little Prince Bacon – Taiwan

These little crunchy bits of noodles have a great bacon flavor. The big bag comes with a ton of little bags. My wife and I found these at an Asian grocery near Disneyland during our honeymoon – bacon snacks!  Original review

#2: Komforte Chockolates Savory Ramen – United States

The chocolate was exceedingly good – a really nice 53% dark chocolate I enjoyed thoroughly – premium stuff. It’s not so dark that it will put off the milkies and not so light on cacao that it lacks richness. The bits of noodles were nice and crunchy, and not hard like a rock. The soy, onion and garlic flavors were very much muted by the rich chocolate flavor, but that wasn’t a horrible thing. Original review

#1: Mamee Monster Snek Mi Perisa Pedas – Malaysia

I really like the crunch of the noodles; they seem a little different than the other Mamee Monster varieties; they’re really crispy, but maybe have a little more give to them. They have a nice spicy flavor to them which was great and a little bit of sweetness and more spiciness from the seasoning – excellent snacks. Original review
